Telephone Recorders >> Basics

3 Types of Telephone Recorders

What you should know

What are the different types telephone recorders?
Telephone recorders or tape recorders in general operate one of several ways.
  • Constant record
  • Voice activated recording
  • Line activated recording

Each method has it's purpose.

Constant Record
You are probably most familiar with tape recorders that start and stop on command.  You simply press record and the unit will record audio until the tape ends, the batteries go dead, or you press stop.

These types of recorders are usually less expensive then their counterparts but require constant attention from the operator.

Voice Activated
Voice activated recording is pretty much a self explanatory term.  It simply means that the recorder has built-in circuitry that will detect sound and activate the recorder accordingly.  When it hears sound it will begin recording and when the sound stops, so will the recorder.

The voice activated recorder is a time and tape saver.  It enables the user to record only what is necessary and not dead air.  One drawback to voice activated recorders is that they use battery power even if they are not recording.  The voice activation circuitry must be powered in order to function properly.  The use of an A/C adapter will eliminate this worry though.

Tech note: Most digital, office type phones require the use of voice activated recorders since they operate on different voltage than line activated recorders.

Line Activated
Line activated tape recorders work similar to voice activated recorders but the two terms are commonly misunderstood. While they are definitely similar, they are also very different.

Line activated recorders operate only on analog type phone lines.  These are the phone lines used in residential phones.  If you have a digital phone system in your home or office then you must install the line activated recorder "before" the system.  They WILL NOT work if you plug them into a digital outlet.

Line activated recorders sit idle until the handset of the phone is lifted off it's base or an answering machine, speakerphone, or cordless phone is in use.  They DO NOT sense audio, they sense a drop in voltage that occurs when you begin using your phone.  When the voltage returns to normal (you hang up), the recorder will return to the idle state and stop recording.

Line activated recorders that operate on battery power are extremely energy efficient because no power is being used when the recorder is idle and the phone is on hook.  You can use one set of batteries much longer with this type of unit than you can with any other.
